What is Baxter's Nerve Entrapment?

Baxter's Nerve Entrapment, also known as Baxter's Neuropathy or Baxter's Neuritis, is a severe type of heel pain. The most common type of heel pain is Plantar Fasciitis but it is thought that approximately 20% of cases of chronic heel pain are due to Baxter's Nerve Entrapment. This article will provide an overview of what Baxter's Neuropathy is and show you some of the best shoes for Baxter's Nerve Entrapment.

The Baxter’s nerve is a small nerve coming from the larger plantar nerve on the inside of the ankle. It is this small nerve which supplies the little muscles in each foot and sensation to the heel. If this nerve is trapped or compressed under the heel bone, the result is acute nerve pain in the heel.

How is Baxter's Nerve Entrapment Diagnosed?

Baxter's Nerve Entrapment is often mistakenly diagnosed as Plantar Fasciitis. Indeed there are a lot of similarities between Baxter's Neuropathy and Plantar Fasciitis. Many people will only find out about Baxter's Nerve Entrapment after spending months trying to treat their Plantar Fasciitis with no improvement.

Imaging or an X-ray is often required to diagnose Baxter's Nerve Entrapment. An X-ray can help determine the presence of heel spurs or the thickening of the nerve sheath or other tissues putting pressure on the nerve.

Causes, Signs & Symptoms of Baxter's Nerve Entrapment

Before we look at the best shoes for Baxter's Nerve Entrapment, we want to better understand what causes this nerve pain in the heel and its symptoms.

Baxter’s Nerve Entrapment can result in pinched nerve heel pain, so the symptoms can include numbness, burning or a sharp shooting pain at the bottom of your feet. The bottom inside of your heel can also feel tender. Unlike Plantar Fasciitis, the pain of Baxter’s Nerve Entrapment is usually more localized.

There are some other differences in symptoms for Baxter’s Nerve Entrapment. Unlike Plantar Fasciitis, patients generally don't suffer with any early morning pain. Instead this nerve pain in the heel tends to get worse during the day or at night.

Certain activities including running or even too much walking can intensify nerve pain in the heel. People with Baxter's Neuropathy need to avoid ill-fitting shoes as this can worsen the condition. Comfortable shoes for Baxter’s Nerve Entrapment are very important.

Poor fitting orthotics can have the same effect on nerve pain in the heel too.

Who is Most Likely to Suffer from Baxter's Nerve Entrapment?

Whilst anyone can suffer from nerve pain in the heel and Baxter's Nerve Entrapment, there are certain groups of people who are most at risk of this nerve entrapment.

Athletes are often the most likely group to suffer from nerve heel pain. Runners, sprinters, dancers and gymnasts, in particular, have problems with their feet because they exert a lot of pressure on this part of their bodies.

Other risk groups for Baxter's Nerve Entrapment include people who stand on their feet all day. For example teachers, nurses and any other hard-working professionals who spend a lot of time on their feet. It is very important that these people wear comfortable shoes for their foot conditions.

Video: Type of Shoes to Wear for Plantar Fasciitis

Founder and Designer of Sole Bliss, Lisa Kay shares her top tips on how to choose shoes for Plantar Fasciitis.

Here are our top tips for finding shoes for Baxter's Nerve Entrapment:

  1. Wear shoes with arch support
  2. Wear shoes with underfoot cushioning
  3. Wear shoes with shock absorption
  4. Buy the right shoe size

1. Wear shoes with arch support

If you are looking for comfy and supportive shoes for Baxter's Nerve Entrapment, they must have arch support. Arch support is designed to distribute pressure evenly across your foot which prevents straining any particular part of your foot. Arch support also provides stability and balance which can improve your posture. Better posture reduces the likelihood of additional foot problems.

Sole Bliss' closed-back shoes feature an anti-pronating arch support device which helps with stability and balance and counters the inward rolling (pronation) of your feet as you walk.

2. Wear shoes with underfoot cushioning

If you suffer with nerve pain in the heel, it is very important that your shoes have plenty of underfoot cushioning. Shoes for Baxter's Nerve Entrapment should be more comfortable than wearing your favorite slippers, whilst providing the support your feet need. It is especially important to have cushioning under the heel, where the nerve pain is most prominent.

Sole Bliss shoes for Baxter's Nerve Entrapment feature triple-layer underfoot cushioning, consisting of three distinct layers of high-quality, anti-bacterial memory foam. Our sneakers feature an ultra-cushioned and anatomically contoured footbed which soothes the nerve pain in your heels.

3. Wear shoes with shock absorption

Shock absorption is a must-have feature for shoes for Baxter's Nerve Entrapment. Shock absorption softens the impact of your feet hitting hard surfaces and reduces the risk of worsening Baxter's Neuropathy.

With Sole Bliss' triple-layer underfoot cushioning system, the base layer is designed for shock absorption.

4. Buy the right shoe size

It may sound obvious, but it is so important to ensure that you wear the right shoe size. Shoes which are too tight can worsen the pain of Baxter's Nerve Entrapment and cause additional foot problems. Shoes which are too big may lead to heel slippage, which can wear down the protective pads under your feet.

So before you invest in shoes for Baxter's Nerve Entrapment, make sure you find the right shoe size!

How to Relieve Baxter's Nerve Entrapment and Treatment for Baxter's Nerve Entrapment

If you want to relieve the pain of Baxter's Nerve Entrapment, there are several things which can be done. Our main recommendation is to wear comfortable shoes for Baxter's Nerve Entrapment. The importance of wearing comfortable, supportive shoes for neuropathy cannot be underestimated!

You should also visit a podiatrist or a physical therapist for treatment of Baxter's Nerve Entrapment. They may give you some stretching and foot strengthening exercises to work into your daily routine. Taping and/or orthotics may also be prescribed to help prevent pronation (the inward rolling of your foot as you walk).

In some cases, your specialist may offer you a Baxter’s nerve injection of cortisone. This injection generally provides immediate pain relief but there are side effects which need to be discussed with your specialist before receiving any injection.
