Causes of Foot Problems
Bunions
Did you know that roughly 14 million people suffer from bunions in the UK? Bunions – or Hallux Valgus – are a bony lump that grows on the side of your foot, on your big toe. This common condition is caused by ill-fitting shoes, genetics, long-term conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, or flat feet.
Symptoms vary depending on the severity of the condition but often present as a red or swollen big toe, pain in the joints of your toes, foot pain in the balls of your feet and, in some cases, blisters.

Plantar Fasciitis
If you are suffering from heel pain, you may have Plantar Fasciitis, a common condition that affects the area of your foot known as the plantar fascia. This is the thick band of tissue that runs along the arch of your foot and acts as a shock absorber when you’re walking.
When you have Plantar Fasciitis, this tissue becomes damaged with tiny tears, and pain is often described as sharp and stabbing. It’s usually worse after you’ve been resting and is often caused by high-impact exercises. You won’t be surprised to hear that many runners experience this condition, especially if they don’t invest in a decent pair of trainers!
Flat Feet
Whether you call it flat feet, pes planus, or fallen arches, the symptoms remain the same. Your feet have little to no arch, which can lead to foot pain, ankle pain from overpronation, shin splints, and more.
If you live with this condition, it’s likely you’ve had it since birth. All babies are born with flat feet, and some people never develop normal arches. This is largely due to genetics—so you can blame your grandparents for that!
In addition, certain genetic disorders can also contribute to flat feet. Conditions such as cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, and clubfoot are known to play a role.

Heel Spurs
If you experience stress on your foot ligaments, you could be at risk of developing a heel spur – a bony growth that forms below your heel bone and inside your foot.
Approximately 1 in 10 people have heel spurs. Symptoms can vary and may include pain and tenderness in the bottom of the heel, sharp pains or a dull ache, as well as swelling, inflammation, and difficulty walking.
Gout
Gout might sound like something from a history lesson, but it’s still very prevalent today. In fact, gout is the most common form of inflammatory arthritis, causing swelling and severe pain in the joints – particularly at the base of the big toe.
The condition is triggered by tiny crystals of uric acid forming in and around the joints. It most commonly affects older people or those with diets high in meat and alcohol.
Other contributing factors include genetics, kidney disease, obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, and severe psoriasis.

Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis is a painful condition that commonly affects the joints and becomes more likely o occur as you age. Over time, repeated stress or injury can damage a joint, leading to permanent changes within it.
Affecting 1 in 10 adults in the UK, osteoarthritis often causes severe pain, stiffness, and swelling. Some people with the condition even report a crunching or grinding sensation when moving the affected joint.
Sciatica
“Ouch” is the first word that springs to mind when we think of sciatica! This common condition occurs when the sciatic nerve – which runs from your lower back to your feet – is compressed, causing sharp, burning pain in the lower back and down the back of one leg.
There are several ways you can develop sciatica, including a slipped disc, where the soft cushion of tissue between the bones in your spine pushes out. The NHS also cites spinal stenosis (narrowing of the part of the spine where nerves pass through) and spondylolisthesis (when one of the bones in your spine slips out of position) as other potential causes.

Morton’s Neuroma
Morton’s Neuroma, also known as Plantar Digital Neuroma, is a painful condition that typically affects people between the ages of 35 and 60, particularly women.
The condition occurs when the tissue surrounding the plantar digital nerves – which run between the long bones (metatarsals) in your feet – thickens. This can cause significant discomfort, often described as a shooting or stabbing pain in the forefoot. Some people even report feeling as though there is a pebble or lump stuck under their foot.
Poorly fitting shoes are often the culprit, especially those that are tight, pointy, or high-heeled. However, certain sports and other foot conditions, such as flat feet or high arches, can also contribute to the development of Morton’s Neuroma.
Metatarsalgia
Suffering from pain in the ball of your foot? You may have Metatarsalgia.
This condition, which affects around 80% of people at some point in their lives, is caused by excess pressure on the metatarsal bones. Common triggers include sports, ill-fitting footwear, excess weight, or foot deformities such as high arches, bunions, or hammertoes.
The pain often worsens with prolonged standing or high-impact activities like running. If left untreated, Metatarsalgia can lead to further complications.

Big Feet
If you have big feet relative to your height, you may face several foot problems that can make life a little trickier.
Many people with larger feet struggle to find shoes for larger feet due to limited availability on the market. Wearing poorly fitted shoes can lead to a variety of foot problems, ranging from blisters to an increased risk of overpronation – a condition where your feet roll inwards excessively, causing pain in the ankles, knees, and hips.
Swollen Feet
The same challenges apply if you have swollen feet, often caused by injury, medical conditions, or unhealthy lifestyle factors.

SHOP NOW
Struggling to find shoes for swollen foot pain can lead to reduced mobility, increased pain, and a higher risk of developing additional foot problems, such as bunions. Swollen feet can also increase the risk of circulation issues. If left untreated, this can result in serious complications, including deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a potentially life-threatening blood clot, and cellulitis, a bacterial skin infection caused by skin breakdown.
Corns and Calluses
Corns (small lumps of hard skin) and calluses (larger patches of rough, thickened skin) are common foot complaints. They are often caused by wearing high heels, ill-fitting shoes, or not wearing socks with shoes.
While corns and calluses can sometimes be painful, they are generally harmless and can be easily treated by soaking the affected area in warm water and gently removing the hard skin with a pumice stone.
