Do Men Have Bunions?

Did You Know Men Have Bunions Too?

Bunions are generally associated with women, but it’s true - men DO have bunions! In fact, approximately 4 million men in the UK alone suffer from bunions.

What is a Bunion?

A bunion is a misaligned toe joint which looks like a bony lump at the base of the big toe. It forms when the big toe starts moving towards the other toes on the same foot whilst the main foot bone (the 1st metatarsal) starts moving in the direction of the other foot.

Once a bunion starts developing, there is a tendency for ligaments around the big toe joint to loosen. The big toe then gradually moves further towards the other toes and the main foot bone moves further in the direction of the other foot, making the condition worse.

Why are women more prone to Bunions?

We’ve all seen photos in the press of female celebrities with bunions! They are pictured wearing ill-fitting shoes and their unsightly feet are blamed on years of wearing unrealistically high heels. But the truth is that there is no scientific evidence to suggest that poor fitting shoes actually cause bunions - it’s a hereditary condition. If you mother or grandmother had bunions, then you probably will end up with them too! Squeezing your feet into uncomfortable shoes is very likely to exacerbate this problem and although men have the same inherited tendency, women’s shoe choices tend to worsen the condition, whereas men tend to wear lower, wider and more spacious footwear.

In general, women have looser ligaments than men and so their joints are more likely to move out of line and cause bunions.

Another reason for the higher prevalence of bunions among women than men is related to pregnancy. Pregnant women release a hormone called Relaxin during their pregnancy. This hormone prepares the body for childbirth by loosening the ligaments around the pelvis, but it can also affect the ligaments in the feet as well, aiding the formation and development of bunions and wider feet. Additional weight gained during pregnancy and the change in walking style during this period can also have an impact.

Do Men have Bunions?

The reason men have bunions tends to be due to genetics. If your parents or grandparents had them, then it’s likely that you will too. It’s an inherited pre-disposition relating to the shape of your foot and its biomechanics (the way it moves). For example, if you have flat feet, then you tend to roll inwards as you walk or run, instead of your foot rolling evenly from heel to toe. This adds extra pressure on your tendons and ligaments around your toe joint, making it less stable and more likely to form a bunion.

Other reasons for bunion formation are the same for both men and women and include: obesity (which puts huge strain on your foot joints); rheumatoid arthritis, an inflammatory disease affecting the joints; gout, which typically affects the big toe joint and other conditions associated with loose ligaments.

We've found a few men with bunions! Here are 5 male celebrities with bunions:

3. Trying on your Sole Bliss shoes.

We hope you love your shoes as soon as you try them on, but we understand that ordering shoes for wide or difficult feet can mean that some styles don't work for you. In these cases, you can return your shoes free of charge to us for either an exchange or a refund, and you have 40 days from the day that you receive your order to do so.

If you have any doubts about whether or not the style or size you have ordered is right for you, please don't hesitate to reach out to us, and we can help you.

When trying on our shoes, please do so in a carpeted area. This includes walking in the shoes to see if they are the correct fit - you must do this in a carpeted area to ensure the soles of the shoes are not marked or damaged.

All shoes must be returned to us in their original, resaleable condition and packaging where possible (e.g., return shoes to us in their original shoe box.)

If you return damaged or worn shoes to us, we won't be able to give you a refund and we may have to send them back to you. All items are carefully inspected on return.

4. Returning shoes for an exchange or refund.

Inside your package you will find a Returns Form. Simply check the appropriate box ('Exchange' or 'Refund'), listing the reason for your return from the options available. If you are returning shoes to us for an exchange, please ensure you indicate the new size you require. Include the form inside your return package to us.

You will have a free United States Postal Service returns label inside your parcel when it arrives. Take your parcel to a USPS location to drop off your returning items - you can locate your nearest USPS drop-off point here.

Simply stick the returns label on to the front of your parcel and hand it over at the drop-off point. For security, take note - or take a photo of - your returns label so that you have a copy of your tracking number. We will not know your specific returns tracking number, so it is your responsibility to keep a record of it in case your package goes missing.

If you are missing either a Returns Form or a free returns label, please contact us and we will issue you with a new one as soon as possible.

Please note that should you wish to use an alternative courier or delivery service to return your shoes to us, you are responsible for the items until they reach our returns hub. We cannot accept responsibility for missing packages sent through alternative delivery companies.

Our Returns Address is: Sole Bliss, 130 Woodruff Avenue, Scarsdale, New York, USA. 10583

5. We’ll fulfil your request quickly.

If you need a refund, we will process it within 2-3 days of receiving your return and notify you of its completion via email. Please allow 7 - 10 business days (depending on your bank) for the funds to appear in your account.

Sales Tax

If you live in a state where Sole Bliss has an obligation to collect sales tax, you'll see it applied to your order at Checkout, which will be correct for the shipping address that you've selected.

You won't have to pay sales tax on Gift Vouchers, but you may have to pay sales tax on any shipping charges you pay.

Sales tax is calculated on the total of your order, after discount. The amount of tax charged to your order depends on your shipping address. The tax is calculated based on state rates and the items you are purchasing. We'll always show you how much sales tax you'll be charged when you go to Checkout.

The sales tax shown at checkout will be for your default address so this may change if you change your shipping address.

If you have not been charged sales tax on your order and you are lawfully required to do so, it is your responsibility to pay use tax to your state.

You can find out more info about sales tax by visiting your state or US territories department of revenue website.
